Featured Artists

SCOTT BRIDLE

Scott Bridle’s early years were spent at Erambie, his family’s grazing property in the Glenmorgan District of south-west Queensland, where he first became absorbed with and developed a passion for the land.  Scott’s landscapes capture the raw beauty of outback Australia from vantage points seen by few.  His portraits breathe empathy for his subjects who seem to be wrought from the tough country in which they live and work.  The images are brought to the viewer here so they may share in his intimate knowledge and enjoyment of this unique country.

 SONIA BORDER

Goondiwindi artist Sonia Border brings a lively element to her artwork. The semi-abstract style of these ‘fun’ paintings in charcoal and acrylics is a contrast to Sonia’s typical conventional style of those depicting the quieter side of our lifestyle. “One part of me wants to jump for joy and the other to stop and smell the roses.”

BINNIE DONOVAN

The richness and depth of Binnie Donovan’s bitumen paintings brings imaginary people, angels, cupids, fairies and moth-people to life. “I have always been fascinated by faces and hands, and the expressions of both,” Binnie said. “I like to capture people unawares, and paint subjects not as they would pose but as a “fly on the wall” peek at their everyday doings and actions.”

CHRISTINE PORTER

Formerly of Goondiwindi,  Christine is a painter and printmaker living and working in Lismore, NSW. She has received more than 100 awards and prizes for her artwork including the 2006 McGregor Fellowship ( for overseas travel) from the University of Southern Queensland. A full time practicing artist , she has artwork  in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia  ; the International Watercolour Museum, Mexico City ( representing Australia) ; the Brisbane City Council  as well as many smaller public, corporate and private collections  worldwide . She is an elected member of both the Australian Watercolour Institute and  the  Royal Art Society of New South Wales. She has , since 1990, exhibited regularly in Brisbane, Sydney, regional centres , and  in 2007 and 2008 : Edinburgh, Scotland.

WIN ASH

Win Ash is passionate about Goondiwindi, it’s people and it’s history. Winifred’s life long love of local history and bush landscape has been a recurring subject in her artwork particularly so in the last thirty years.  Milestones exhibition in 2009 marked Winifred’s 86th year and is a continuation of her lifelong journey as a painter of subjects of historical interest and of the landscape in which she has always lived – it is also an artists very appropriate response to this important anniversary of Queensland history.

JANE DONALDSON

Jane Donaldson began painting in 2008 with the entry of her youngest child into primary school. Her initial efforts to reinvent her life as a stay at home mum have flourished as her work is now held in private collections and is commissioned throughout the eastern states of Australia. Jane currently resides on rural acreage near Stanthorpe in southern Queensland with her husband and three children and divides her time between creating with her family, on the canvas, the garden, and in the kitchen.

MAX BUTLER

Besides the usual snaps of people and historical gems, I take hundreds of photos of the land, usually from a high vantage point. I search for the right colours to place beside others in order for the painting to come alive. A boring vista of dead grass on a dry, salt-bush plain provides an opportunity to place splashes of bright yellow and blue together on a base of brilliant red and orange. The paintings are not true representation of what really exists which is why I do not call my paintings “West of Boulia”, “Vineyards at Denman”, “Canefields near Ingham”, and so on. I simply call them “My Country” and have numbered them in order of execution since I began this series in May 2003.

For some, these paintings will be too bright. I do not apologize for this, if we look hard enough, those colours are right there in the landscape of our country. I have included in this exhibition scenes from the lavender fields of Tasmania, the vineyards of the Hunter, North Queensland, the outback and the coastal areas. It is my dearest hope that the images will remind you of places you have been and perhaps in your future travels, you will find places that remind you of my paintings. How bold is that!
